In an unprecedented milestone for the tourism sector, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have announced a strategic collaboration to promote the development of sustainable tourism in Latin America. The agreement, signed in a virtual ceremony that was attended by senior officials from both institutions, has the main objective of promoting initiatives that promote responsible and environmentally friendly tourism in the region.

The alliance between the UNWTO and the IDB aims to channel investments and resources for innovative projects that promote sustainability in tourist destinations, promoting practices that protect biodiversity, preserve cultural heritage and generate a positive impact on local communities.

Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO Secretary-General, expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration: “Sustainable tourism is essential for the growth and well-being of nations. This strategic alliance with the IDB will allow us to work together to strengthen the tourism industry in Latin America, promoting responsible practices that protect our planet and benefit future generations."

For his part, Mauricio Claver-Carone, President of the IDB, stated: “Tourism is a key driver for economic development in the region, and it is essential to promote its growth in a sustainable manner. This partnership with the UNWTO gives us the opportunity to support innovative projects that promote responsible tourism, benefiting local communities and preserving the natural and cultural wealth of Latin America.”

Ambas instituciones se comprometen a trabajar estrechamente con gobiernos, sector privado y actores locales para identificar y apoyar proyectos que impulsen el turismo sostenible, fomentando la creación de empleo, la protección del entorno y el desarrollo equitativo de la región.Este acuerdo representa un paso significativo en la promoción de un turismo más responsable en América Latina, sentando las bases para un enfoque más sostenible y equitativo en la industria turística a nivel regional.
